Brie Larson is dressing like a high-fashion superhero on her promo tour for the hotly-anticipated film Captain Marvel. And for the Oscar-winning actress, it is important that her red carpet wardrobe conveys a message of female empowerment, a theme which is celebrated in her role as Carol Danvers in the latest Marvel Comics film.

“There’s definitely a lot of Carol Danvers and Captain Marvel-inspired looks on this press tour, which has been really fun to include,” Larson told PEOPLE while promoting the film.

But the most important thing for the actress is that she feels powerful, confident and comfortable in what she wears.

“Clothes are a form of expression and they can be something that makes you feel empowered. I’m introverted, and for me having something that makes me feel good in these very public moments is imperative,” she said. “But, because we have a really long press tour and a lot of looks, it gives me a lot of opportunities to kind of meditate on what empowerment really means when it comes to fashion.”

At Wednesday night’s New York City premiere sponsored by Fiji Water, Larson did just that, wearing a rainbow sequin Rodarte look featuring a cutout bodice and statement sleeves. She teamed her high-shine moment with an equally colorful custom Edie Parker hot-pink clutch featuring the word “Captain.”

Her red carpet press tour has been collaboration between her stylist Samantha McMillen and glam squad led by hairstylist Bryce Scarlett and makeup artist Nina Park.

On the carpet, Larson reiterated that for her feeling empowered through fashion is about finding, “different ways of owning my body.”

“That’s been the theme of this whole press tour is owning my body and understanding that it changes from day-to-day what feels empowering to me and what makes me feel good,” she shared at the premiere.

And as she’s shown on this press tour, what makes her feel good changes daily.

One of her favorite looks of the tour? The custom Oscar de la Renta look she worn in Singapore (above right) which featured a leather top and pants combo.

“My style is going to be different — sometimes its super flows and feminine, sometimes its really hard and tough, sometimes I want to wear a suit, sometimes I want to wear something baggy,” she said. “Sometimes I want to lean into my youth, sometimes I want to be an older version of myself and I’m allowed to do whatever I want.”
