Though she’s one of the most hilarious actresses in the world, there’s nothing funny about what Emma Stone has revealed in her latest interview. In Rolling Stone’s new issue, the La La Land star spoke out about some of the sexism she has faced in Hollywood.

“There are times in the past, making a movie, when I’ve been told that I’m hindering the process by bringing up an opinion or an idea,” Stone reveals in the cover story. She also described another scenario that hasn’t sat well with her: directors passing off funny lines that she came up with to her male co-stars.

“I hesitate to make it about being a woman, but there have been times when I’ve improvised, they’ve laughed at my joke and then given it to my male co-star. Given my joke away,” she says.

In other cases: “Or it’s been me saying, ‘I really don’t think this line is gonna work,’ and being told, ‘Just say it, just say it, if it doesn’t work we’ll cut it out’—and they didn’t cut it out, and it really didn’t work!'”

Though she doesn’t specify the projects where she experienced such treatment, Stone’s stories are more evidence of the sexism that is plaguing Tinseltown and holding its actresses back. Mila Kunis also shared her experiences earlier this year in an open letter, divulging that she was described as “Ashton Kutcher’s baby mama” by an “influential male producer,” as well as being pressured to pose in a scantily clad look that made her uncomfortable for a photo shoot.

We appreciate Stone’s bravery in discussing the discrimination she’s faced on set. La La Land is in theaters now, though one of her biggest roles is coming up next year when she plays tennis superstar and sports icon Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes.
