L’Équipe report this morning that Marseille have reached a broad agreement with Lens in the night to sign wing-back Jonathan Clauss, with the French international now set to undergo his medical and sign a three-year contract.

With the Artois side’s asking price previously being reported as €10m, the deal will now take the form of a €9m base fee along with €2m in bonuses to buy out the final year of his contract.

Clauss, who was also linked with a move to Chelsea, was Marseille’s priority, and last year’s second-placed Ligue 1 side had made five, or even six, bids before winning over the Sang et Or.

The player himself was keen on a move to OM, with the club allowing him to play in the Champions League this coming season. Lens had allowed him to be sold to a new project provided they would receive an adequate transfer fee.

The 29-year-old leaves Lens after two Ligue 1 seasons which have seen him break onto the scene as one of the best wing players in France, scoring eight goals and registering 18 assists in a spell which led to his first France call-up in March.
