L’Équipe report that Paris Saint-Germain’s losses for the 2021/22 campaign will total around €370m, a figure which will be made official once the DNCG – French football’s financial watchdog – unveils the number in the coming weeks.

Part of this particularly high figure, as L’Équipe point out, can be explained by the club supposedly posting a substantial part of Kylian Mbappé’s new salary onto last season’s accounts, adding several tens of millions of euros to the figures. The Ligue 1 champions have been fined over FFP breaches, and are to pay €10m immediately, with a further €55m suspended. As part of the sanctions, PSG signed a deal with UEFA for the club’s accounts to stick to FFP rules. This includes no more than €60m in losses and the wage bill not exceeding 70% of revenues starting from 2025/26.

One expert explains that PSG are not the only big club to have had particularly high losses last season, in part due to UEFA directives which indicate that 2021/22 would essentially be a “lost year” on which clubs are allowed to add expenses, given that a new cycle of fiscal surveillance begins this year.

Nevertheless, the club’s wage bill of €600m is also something of a handicap, even if revenues outside of transfers have reached €660m. The upper management have projected this figure to pass €800m this year, notably thanks to sponsorship deals, as well as the income from the CVC deal signed by the league authorities.
