The 35-year-old will return to the Guinness Pro12 after spending spells with London Welsh, Bath and, most recently, Bristol in England.

Dragons will be Henson’s third Welsh region after previously lining out for Ospreys and Cardiff Blues during a much-travelled career.

The capture of Henson, a two-time Grand Slam winner and 2005 Lion, is a real boost for Dragons as they look to strengthen their squad for next year. Leinster back Zane Kirchner has also already committed his future to the Rodney Parade club.

“I have really enjoyed my time here at Bristol but when the opportunity came along to join the Dragons and return to Wales, I couldn’t say no,” Henson said.

“I still have loads to offer and I know what Kingsley [Jones, Dragons head coach] wants from me. I’m especially looking forward to pitting myself against the current Welsh players, and hopefully becoming a catalyst and mentor for the tremendous talent that is in the Dragons squad.”

Henson has won 33 Wales caps, the last of which came in 2011, and is currently involved in a relegation battle with Bristol as they look to preserve their Premiership status.

Jones added: ”This is a hugely important signing, and exactly what we need to complement our existing squad.

“I am delighted that Gavin sees the potential within the region and that he is excited about the prospect of assisting this group of backs with their development.

“Having worked with Gavin previously, I am fully aware that he will bring critical experience on the field and inside the training environment.”
