David Shoemaker, author of The Squared Circle: Life, Death and Professional Wrestling, noted on Twitter recently that he has heard that Daniel Bryan needs “Tommy John” surgery and could be out of action for at least three more months.

The Grantland.com reporter tweeted the following:

“Tommy John” surgery refers to a procedure where the ulnar collateral ligament in the medial elbow is replaced with a tendon from somewhere else in the body. Apparently the procedure is pretty common among athletes, especially baseball players, named after “Tommy John,” the first baseball player to undergo the operation.
