The wait is finally over for Black Panther!

Fans flocked to theaters beginning Thursday night to see the monumental Marvel film after waiting months for its release, and as one would imagine, social media went into a frenzy. Not only did the film break a Twitter record as the most-tweeted about movie of 2018 with over five million tweets (as of Feb. 12), but it also sparked a style movement, coined #WakandaCameToSlay by Black Girl Nerds’ Tora Zenzi.

Many fans who attended the Thursday opening night of Black Panther showed their excitement by wearing outfits inspired by the film’s costumes and African roots. And they shared their #WakandaCameToSlay outfits all over social media to express their appreciation for the film’s representation of black culture.

Twitter user @YourLifeAfter25 shared her traditional African ensemble and said “We in here! Checking out @theblackpanther in my traditional slit and kaba sot. Naija girl/Ghana girl. #WakandaCameToSlay!”

Many fans took the opportunity to show off their personal style while incorporating the theme of the movie into their ensembles.

User @AuthorMoJoseph made a date night out of seeing the movie with her husband and wearing traditional African clothing. “Proud, Black and #wakanda ready! #BlackPanther Movie opening #datenight with the hubby!” she said.

Many fans even rocked African-inspired tribal face paint to the screenings, featuring various designs that were used in the film to represent African pride and Afrofuturism.

And of course, #BlackGirlMagic was in full effect as women banded together to see the film.

“My friends and I were the Black folk doing the most at the Black Panther premier last night. We were in good company though and I’m forever in awe of the beauty and community of Blackness,” user @misssharpp Tweeted.

And some die-hard fans even opted to dress up as the Black Panther himself.

And with the movie’s official release today, we can’t wait to see what else people will share with the #WakandaCameToSlay hashtag.
