St. Cloud State University redshirt freshman Austin Goergen has been selected as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference’s wrestler of the week on Jan. 6.
A resident of Caledonia, Minn. and graduate of Caledonia High School, Goergen charted a 3-0 record at 285-pounds to help lead the No. 5 St. Cloud State wrestling team (5-0) to a first place finish at the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Duals in Ashland, Ohio on Jan. 5.
Goergen posted two falls and a major decision in his three matches at the duals. He opened the day with a 10-2 major decision victory over Nick Budd of Gannon. The victory capped SCSU’s 33-6 win over No. 20 Gannon. In the semi-finals, Goergen posted a critical pin at 6:00 over Indianapolis’ Evan Wooding. The victory helped seal SCSU’s 27-15 dual win over No. 8 Indianapolis.
To finish the day, Goergen scored a pin at 5:31 over Ashland’s Tyler Houska. The pin provided SCSU with six points in its 36-6 victory over No. 16 Ashland in the tournament’s championship bout.
Goergen owns a 12-4 record this season for the Huskies.
St. Cloud State will continue its 2014 season on Jan. 11-12 at the NWCA Division II National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa. The Huskies are the two-time defending NWCA Division II National Duals champions and they will enter tournament action as the #5 ranked Division II team in the nation.
