Ever since Kanye West and Kim Kardashian started dating in 2012, the rapper and fashion designer has been influencing the reality star’s style. And she has always embraced his advice. West has helped his wife evolve into the fashion trailblazer she is today, and we saw the beginning of her fashion transformation on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. West suggested that Kardashian swap out her curve-hugging bandage dresses and over-size sunglasses for low-key, neutral staples and tiny Matrix-inspired sunglasses.

Although it seems like it’s been an eternity since we’ve last seen Kardashian step out in something not sleek and monochromatic, there was a time when she was a bit hesitant to part with some of her OG closet staples.

On a 2012 episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Mr. West and his stylist at the time, Renelou Padora, paid a visit to Kardashian’s closet ready to give it the ultimate makeover. “Kanye has definitely inspired me to be a little bit more of an individual. I think my style is just evolving and changing and I think it should because that is what life is about,” Kardashian said on the episode. “He is a fashion designer and he loves clothes so I’m excited to collaborate with him to see what his take on fashion is.”

Even though Kardashian expressed her excitement for the big makeover, she became hesitant after West told her they have to “really clean out everything,” meaning she would have to part ways with some of her favorite designer pieces. One of the pieces she just couldn’t give up? A shearling Louis Vuitton bag. Padora mistook the designer bag for a dog bag and when Kardashian asked West if she should keep the bag for her daughter some day, he just looked at her speechless in disbelief –– sorry North West!

But it was the removal of Kardashian’s shoes from her closet that really got to her. “It was like a pile to the ceiling, of shoes” Kardashian shared on Live With Kelly and Michael a day after the couple’s first wedding anniversary in 2015. “And all my amazing shoes that I loved. And I started crying. I was like, ‘I can’t get rid of this stuff. Your stylist has no idea what she’s talking about.’ So I put it all in another room and I was like, ‘I’ll trust your opinion but I’m not getting rid of my stuff.’”

It didn’t take too long before Kardashian to realize the power of West’s style reinvention. “I walked in my room and there was an entire room filled with all new clothes and all the stuff he wanted to fill back up my closet with and it was really cool new designers –– I hadn’t even heard of some of these designers before,” Kardashian said on the talk show. “It really helped me fall in love with fashion and I eventually did get rid of most of that stuff and my style has totally evolved and changed but I didn’t see it at the time, I had to work it out myself.”

Now the star is her husband’s ultimate Yeezy muse. In lieu of a fashion show for his last collection with Adidas, Kardashian modeled all the pieces from the Yeezy Season 6 line on her own in a look book styled by Carine Roitfeld.

“I love [my hometown of] Calabasas for being my runway,” Kardashian shared.
