The 2013
Quincy Half Marathon, originally slated for March 10, has been rescheduled for
Sunday, May 5. Quincy Half
After communicating with several fellow
race directors, business leaders, city officials, sponsors, vendors, volunteers
and many, many, many runners, race officials have decided that its best to
reschedule the event and a new permit has now been secured from the city.
The industry standard in this situation
is that the event is simply not held and all proceeds remaining after expenses
such as advertisements, registration costs, shirt production, permitting and
other fees, etc., are speedily, and without ceremony, donated to charity.
Honoring the wishes of the great
majority of the runners and others who communicated with race officials, we
will disregard industry standards and instead move ahead to May 5, allowing us
to produce a road race worthy of all our loyal runners and also maximize our
donations to Quincy’s youth.
Proceeds benefit the Quincy Track Club
and the cross-country and track programs at the two city high schools and five
middle schools as well as contributing to the South Shore YMCA, the Dana Farber
Marathon Challenge and other worthy endeavors, completing the charitable
mission at the heart of our efforts.
The March 8 snowfall and the subsequent
concerns that arose regarding public safety were factors well beyond the
control of race officials, but we appreciate difficult decision the Quincy
Police were forced to make for the well-being of runners and the public
at-large. We hope you now support our decision.
Thank you for your thoughtful comments
and consideration during this process.
