Saint John’s wrestling travels to the Sunshine State for the Citrus Invitational this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 29-30, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Seven Saint John’s wrestlers competed at the St. Cloud State Husky Open back on Dec. 8. Junior Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.) led the Johnnies for the second consecutive tournament with a 2-0 record to take first place in the three-man, 133-pound bracket. He defeated his teammate, freshman Zack Zavadil (Clearwater, Minn./Monticello), via technical fall in his first match and posted an 11-0 major decision over Augsburg’s Quinn Youngs. He is now 9-1 on the young season.
Junior Quincy Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) recorded the Johnnies’ other win on the day and finished fourth with a 1-2 record at heavyweight. He pinned Dominic Tudor of Division II Mary (N.D.) in his consolation semifinal. Both losses were to Augsburg’s Ethan Hofacker.
Senior Luke Dodd (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview), who was ranked No. 10 by D3wrestle.com at the time, lost his first match at 197 pounds by an 11-8 decision to Division II St. Cloud State’s Noah Ryan and left the tournament. He is now 6-3 on the year.
THE TOURNAMENT: The large tournament is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET competition both Saturday and Sunday at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center.

WHO WILL BE THERE: In addition to the Johnnies, other teams scheduled to have competitors in the tournament include No. 1 Augsburg, Cornell (Iowa), No. 23 Ferrum (Va.), John Carroll (Ohio), Liberty (Va.), Muhlenberg (Pa.), No. 18 NYU, Oneonta State (N.Y.), Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.), Trinity (Conn.), North Carolina-Pembroke, Ursinus (Pa.) and Williams (Mass.).
FOR THE JOHNNIES: The Johnnies are scheduled to have 12 wrestlers participating this weekend: Becker, Dodd, Spiering, Zavadil, freshman Josh Clark (Fridley, Minn./Totino-Grace), junior Dan Gainer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), junior Dan Gehrz (Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy), junior Anthony Hennen (Cologne, Minn./Norwood-Young American), freshman Joe Hennen (Cologne, Minn./Norwood-Young America), freshman Caleb Jungling (Anoka, Minn.), freshman Jacob Scherber (Buffalo, Minn.) and junior Dominic Skawiniak (Rogers, Minn.).
