The release of secret footage from an Ibiza villa showing Austria’s far-right leader promising a woman posing as a Russian oligarch state contracts in return for shady financial backing has sent shock waves across Europe.

But who lured FPÖ leader Hans Christian Strache into the honey trap in 2017 remains a mystery, with speculation ranging from a hoax played by a television comedian to high level espionage.

In the video, Strache and fellow FPÖ man Johannes Gudenus are seen encouraging an elegant blond woman who they believe to be the niece of a Russian oligarch to surreptitiously channel funds to their party on the promise of road building contracts when they get into power.
