SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Augustana wrestling team has signed three more wrestlers to the 2020-21 signing class head coach Jason Reitmeier announced Tuesday. The athletes are set to enroll in Augustana this fall and compete for the Vikings during the 2020-21 season as freshmen.
Danny Reynolds | Andover High School | 5 – 11 | 184 lbs.
Reynolds was born on June 26, 2001 in Maplewood, Minnesota, to parents Scott and Judy Reynolds. He has three older siblings, Kathryn, John and Elizabeth, and enjoys going to his cabin during the summer, playing video games and hanging out with his friends. While at Augustana, Reynolds plans to major in exercise and sport sciences while minoring in biology.
Reynolds plans to graduate from Andover High School in June of 2020. Currently, as a senior, he is a team captain and has a record of 29-3. As a junior, he qualified for the state tournament, was named all-conference, won his team’s MVP award and went 38-9. As a sophomore, he went 26-14 and was an all-conference honorable mention. During his freshman season, he won Andover’s “Hardest Worker on the Team” award.
“We are excited to have Danny join the Augustana Wrestling family,” Reitmeier said. “Danny is an exceptional athlete who is strong and powerful. He has a great attitude and work ethic that he brings to the mat and the classroom. We are excited to get Danny in the room, he has a high ceiling.”
John Babineau | Andover High School | 5 – 5 | 125 lbs.
Babineau was born on Sept. 16, 2001 to parents Michael and Teresa Babineau. He has one younger sibling, Julia, and enjoys fishing, frisbee golf and lifting weights. While at Augustana, he plans to major in physics and minor in biochemistry.
Babineau also plans to graduate from Andover High School in June of 2020. Currently in his senior year, he has a 31-5 record including 22 pins. As a junior he went 42-11 and was named all-conference and all-state, won the section championship and garnered the most wins on his team. As a sophomore, he went 31-12 and was all-conference, won Andover’s MVP award and had the most wins on his team. As a freshman, he went 23-10 with all conference accolades and another team MVP award.
“High quality light weights are tough to find and we have one in John,” Reitmeier said. “He is extremely bright and shows that in matches and in the classroom. John is solid in every position and continues to show growth in his wrestling. We are excited to get John in our room to work with Coach Petry.”
Derek Werner | Red Rock Central High School | 6 – 2 | 197 lbs.
Werner was born on Dec. 18, 2001 in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, to parents Molly and Wade Werner. He has one older sibling, Cole, and enjoys hunting, sports and video games. While at Augustana, he plans to major in engineering and minor in physics.
Werner plans to graduate from Red Rock Central High School in May of 2020. As a senior, he currently owns a record of 28-3 with 18 pins. As a junior, he went 33-6 with 18 falls and placed fourth at the state tournament while winning his team’s MVP award. As a sophomore, he went 21-12 with seven falls and was named most improved wrestler on his team. As a freshman, he went 7-2.
“We have worked really hard to bring in a talented big man and we feel Derek is exactly that,” Reitmeier said. “Derek is long, athletic and has room to grow. He has the size to be a 197 or grow into a heavyweight. I am excited to get Derek working with our upper weights. Derek is also an exceptional student-athlete.”
The trio joins Nathan Simmonds and Payton Anderson, who signed their National Letter’s of Intent in November, bringing the signing class to five student-athletes.
