A Bay County teenager who went missing five years ago has been located and is safe, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday. She also has written a letter to her parents telling them she is safe, according to the sheriff’s office.

Emily Paul was 14-years-old when she was last seen on April 13, 2013. Her mom, Pam Massimiani, came home on that day and found a note from Emily saying she was leaving and going to a safe place.

Paul told her parents she might contact them after she turned 18, according to a report by News 13. Paul “had taught herself on how not to be found,” according to investigators.

Captain Jason Daffin recorded a video message asking Paul to get in touch with the Bay County Sheriff’s Office. In the video, Daffin says that as an adult she was under no obligation to let anyone know where she currently lives as long as she was safe.

Paul called the sheriff’s office on Tuesday, according to deputies. Deputies asked Paul to go to a police station so that her identity could be verified.

About 30 minutes later, deputies received a call from a police station. Officers at the station worked with deputies and collected photographs of Paul and other proof of her identity, according to a news release.

An investigator with that police agency spoke with Emily, one on one, for a period of time. She appeared to be in good health and she had arrived at the police station by herself and left by herself, according to the news release. The sheriff’s office did not release the location of the police department.

“Emily stated that she was safe, she had a support system and she was happy where she was,” the investigator wrote. “She appeared to be in good health and she had arrived at the police station by herself and left by herself.”

The sheriff’s office has closed the missing person case.
