Ruete switches roles

Matthias Ruete has been appointed to replace Manservisi as director-general of the European Commission’s department for home affairs. Ruete, from Germany, has been the Commission’s director-general for mobility and transport since 2010.

He has been dealing with transport issues since 2006, first as director-general of what was then the energy and transport department, and then, after the department was split, in the department for mobility and transport (now known as DG MOVE). (He could not take charge of the energy department because Günther Oettinger, the European commissioner for energy, is a German.)

Ruete was previously a director in the enterprise and industry department, and a director in the enlargement department, overseeing the EU candidatures of Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey.

In 1998, Neil Kinnock, the then European commissioner for transport, made him a director in the transport department. Ruete was put in charge of international relations and the trans-European transport network – the project that came to be known as TENs. Before that he was deputy head of cabinet to former French prime minister Édith Cresson when she was European commissioner for research, innovation and science.

He has also been head of a unit dealing with industrial co-operation in the industry department, assistant to the director-general of what was then the joint internal market and industrial affairs department, and, in his first Commission job, an administrator in the department for social affairs.
