According to France Football, Chelsea have opened negotiations with former player Didier Drogba about becoming Guus Hiddink’s assistant manager.

Drogba had been in the Ivory Coast capital Abidjan for the festive period when he received a long phone call from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich on Wednesday.

Drogba has remained very close to the owner of Chelsea, who asked the Ivorian over the phone to come to London as quickly as possible to discuss terms and conditions concerning a return to Chelsea as the assistant to interim manager Guus Hiddink.

The three men were sitting next to each other during Chelsea’s Premier League encounter with Sunderland this afternoon. Negotiations are currently underway between Drogba and the London club, and an agreement could be reached between now and Monday.

Chelsea representatives are already in talks with Drogba’s current club Montreal Impact, with whom the former Ivorian international has a contract until December 2016.

Drogba for the moment is hesitating about accepting this new challenge because of the recent sacking of José Mourinho, an individual that he is very close to. Drogba is however understood to be very serious about beginning his managerial career as soon as possible and is not treating this opportunity as merely something to do for a couple of months, but rather a potential springboard into the next chapter of his career in football.
